Local Lifestyle

Carmel Valley is less of a known tourist destination than some of the Monterey Peninsula’s more famous coastal communities. Those who venture here discover an idyllic community nestled within a gorgeous landscape. One of the best ways to get a feel for the area is to take a scenic drive along Carmel Valley Road or Laureles Grade Road. Award-winning vineyards stud the countryside, and many maintain tasting rooms in the main Carmel Valley Village area.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

Carmel Valley Village is a quaint downtown area featuring charming historic buildings housing art galleries, farm-to-table restaurants, and wine tasting rooms that offer the chance to sample the bountiful produce of the region’s exceptional vineyards.

Bernardus Winery’s Carmel Valley Tasting Room was the first of these tasting rooms to arrive in the village. The tasting room’s beautiful patio is the perfect place to enjoy chardonnay, pinot noir, and other varietals produced on the Bernardus Estate’s three vineyards. Georis Winery is another must-visit for wine lovers, with its California Mission-style adobe surrounded by lushly landscaped gardens.

Food and wine are closely linked together in Carmel Valley Village. Cowgirl Winery’s tasting room sits across the street from the elegant Corkscrew Café, and its wines pair perfectly with Corkscrew Café’s seasonal Californian cuisine. Other exceptional wineries and vineyards with tasting rooms in the Village include Boekenoogen Winery, Joullian Vineyards & Winery, and Parsonage Winery.

The European-style café Baum & Blume features a pretty outdoor patio and Biergarten, where you can enjoy platters of farmhouse fare and specialty burgers prepared with fresh beets or wild salmon. The historic hunting lodge of Los Laureles Lodge is another fine choice for sophisticated meals prepared with locally sourced ingredients and paired with local wines.

Carmel Valley Village’s unique retailers include the boutique olive oil emporium Quail & Olive, cute curated books and gifts store Olivia & Daisy, and locally branded clothing store Carmel Valley Trading Post.

Things to Do

Garland Ranch Regional Park sprawls across a gorgeous natural area of 541 acres on Carmel Valley Road at the edge of Carmel Valley Village. More than 50 miles of trails for hiking, jogging, and horseback riding traverse the park’s captivating landscape of dense oak woodlands and open oak savannas, rolling grasslands, pretty maple-filled canyons, and chaparral. Scenic standouts within the park include the 800-foot-high Inspiration Point lookout, the waterways of the Carmel River and Garzas Creek, and a waterfall.

The historic Holman Ranch features a 1900s Spanish hacienda and 1940s bungalows, which have hosted overnight stays for Hollywood legends including Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, and Marlon Brando. The Holman Ranch vineyards produce some of the region’s finest chardonnay and pinot noir. Visitors can tour the vineyards then sample their produce in the Holman Ranch’s tasting room. Folktale Winery & Vineyards is another exquisite destination for wine tasting, covering an area of 15 acres with a striking French chateau at its center.

Carmel Valley is also a haven for golfers. The 18-hole course at Carmel Valley Ranch combines challenging play with breathtaking vistas on the only Pete Dye-designed course in Northern California. The Preserve Golf Club also boasts a world-class design and captivating natural scenery. Designed by legendary architect Tom Fazio, The Preserve’s spellbinding course has won numerous accolades, including recognition from Golf Digest as one of the top 100 courses in the entire United States.
